Queensland Mines Rescue Service recently requested assistance in the form of sponsorship, equipment support, and staffing to assist in running the Southern Region Open Cut Mines Rescue Challenge.

The challenge was held at Cameby Downs Coal Mine just outside of the township of Chinchilla. The teams were introduced to each other and provided an induction on the Tuesday evening, before commencing the round of activities on Wednesday morning at 6am.

The teams were assessed across several areas, including:

  • Road Crash Rescue
  • Fire
  • Hazmat
  • Vertical Rescue / Confined space
  • Team leadership
  • Medical
  • Multiple casualty scenarios

Overall all participants utilised the day as a learning opportunity and the benefit to all participants was immediately noticeable. FRSA proudly presented the ‘Best Medical Team’ award to Yancoal’s Yarrabee Coal mine team who made a clean sweep of all the awards. FRSA appreciated the chance to partake in this event and look forward to supporting similar events in the future.
